Childhood Vaccination Scheme in Catalonia

Systematic Vaccination Schedule

Vaccines for Risk Groups / Other Recommended

Rotavirus (RV)

Oral. Recommended for all infants to prevent rotavirus gastroenteritis. Not universally funded.

Flu (Influenza)

Annual. Recommended for all children from 6 to 59 months. Funded for risk groups (chronic diseases, etc.) and pregnant women. Schedule of 2 doses the first year of vaccination in children under 9 years of age if not previously vaccinated.

Meningococcal B (MenB)

Included in calendar at 2, 4 and 12 months. For infants outside this cohort it may be administered on prescription (not universally funded for all infants outside specific risk groups or the current calendar age cohort). Guideline according to age of onset.

Hepatitis A (HAV)

Recommended for children in risk groups (chronic liver disease, treatment with coagulation factors, etc.) or for travelers to endemic areas. Schedule of 2 doses separated by 6-12 months.

Considerations in Special Situations

Premature Infants

Generally, they should be vaccinated according to their chronological age, without correcting for gestational age, with the same doses as those born at term. Exception: hepatitis B vaccine in premature infants <2000g at birth (follow specific guidelines). Monitor for possible episodes of apnea in very premature infants after primary vaccination.

Immunocompromised Children

They require an adapted vaccination schedule. Live attenuated virus vaccines (MMR, varicella, oral rotavirus) are generally contraindicated or should be assessed individually depending on the type and degree of immunosuppression. Vaccination of cohabitants is crucial.

Rescue Calendars (Catch-up)

For children with incomplete or unknown vaccination, an individualized schedule must be developed respecting the minimum intervals between doses. Consult the rescue tables in the official guides. The goal is to administer the necessary doses as soon as possible.
